Comprehensive Audiology & Hearing Tests
At The Ear Wax Clinic, we understand that not every hearing problem is caused by ear wax. That's why we're proud to offer comprehensive audiology services on-site through our specialist team at Pebble Brook Clinic, providing expert hearing assessments in the same convenient location.
If you've noticed that conversations are becoming harder to follow, you're turning the television up more often, struggling to hear in busy environments or simply feel that your hearing isn't what it used to be, our detailed hearing assessments can help identify the cause.
Our comprehensive audiology assessment goes far beyond a basic hearing check. During your appointment, our Clinical Audiologist will carry out a thorough evaluation of your hearing, including a detailed case history, visual ear examination, pure tone hearing assessment, bone conduction testing, speech discrimination testing and middle ear assessment where appropriate. This provides a complete picture of your hearing health and helps determine the most suitable next steps.
If hearing loss is identified, we can discuss personalised treatment options, including professionally fitted hearing aids and ongoing aftercare. Where further medical investigation is needed, we can also provide advice regarding referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist.
By offering both specialist ear wax removal and comprehensive audiology services under one roof, we're able to support your hearing health at every stage—from diagnosing the cause of your symptoms to providing long-term hearing care.
Whether you're experiencing gradual hearing loss, struggling to hear family conversations or simply want reassurance about your hearing, we're here to help you hear with confidence.

What is microsuction?
Microsuction is widely regarded as one of the safest and most effective methods of removing excess ear wax. Using specialist equipment and magnification, wax is gently removed with a small suction device while the ear canal remains clearly visible throughout the procedure.
Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction doesn't use water, making it suitable for many people who have had previous ear problems, wear hearing aids or have been advised against irrigation.
Most appointments take around 20–30 minutes, although this can vary depending on the amount and consistency of the wax. Before treatment, we'll carefully examine your ears and explain exactly what we find, ensuring you feel informed and comfortable throughout your visit.
Common Ear Problems we can help with
What can we help you with?
Many people are surprised to learn that excessive ear wax can cause a wide range of symptoms. If you're experiencing any of the following, ear wax may be contributing to your discomfort:
- Blocked or muffled hearing
- Ear pressure or fullness
- Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears)
- Ear discomfort caused by wax build-up
- Hearing aid users experiencing recurring wax
- Difficulty hearing conversations or television
- Wax affecting hearing tests
- Itchy ears
Every patient is different, which is why we begin each appointment with a thorough assessment before recommending treatment.
What happens during your appointment?
We know that many people feel nervous before their first ear wax removal appointment, especially if they've never experienced microsuction before. Our priority is to help you feel relaxed and informed from the moment you arrive.
Your appointment will include:
- A discussion about your symptoms and medical history
- A detailed examination of your ears
- Gentle microsuction ear wax removal, where appropriate
- Advice on preventing future wax build-up
- The opportunity to ask questions about your ear health
Most patients tell us the treatment is much gentler than they expected and are amazed at the difference it makes to their hearing.

A Bit About Us
How We Got Started

The ear wax clinic was founded by Emily Harrison. Emily trained at Bournemouth university, graduating in 2012 in adult nursing. After 4 years in emergency care for the NHS, she moved into the private sector. Emily spent many years in complex care and specialist IV nursing in the community.
Having a keen interest in ears and suffering many ear issues herself, Emily became a specialist in microsuction ear wax removal, training with the centre for excellence in ear care provider; 'Rotherham Primary Ear Care Service NHS Foundation Trust' for her national diploma in ear health and microsuction qualification.
Emily has also completed an introduction into audiology course with UCL.
Emily and her team now proudly offers consultations and wax removal treatments in her own clinic The Pebble Brook Clinic, located in Newton Poppleford, Exeter, Devon and also, along with a mobile service also covering nursing homes.
